It's a Great Great World - by Kelvin Tong

Recently, I was engaged by Mediacorp Raintree pictures via my polaroid blogshop to do the photography for their gala premiere of "It's a Great Great World" held on 26 Jan, at vivocity.

(Thanks to the lovely Casey and Huihui of Mediacorp Raintree pictures).

There was the suave mediacorp CEO, Mr Lucas Chow of course who presented the film, Director Kelvin Tong..(whom I realised wasn't as adept with Mandarin as I would have thought). He was however a candid and humble guy peppering his whole speech with bouquets for his cast members and the staff behind the scenes.

And then there was the Minister of Communication, Mr Lui Tuck Yew and his wife who were a really cute couple, along with Royston Tan (Director of local films 881 and 15), and Samuel Seow, possibly Singapore's best know media lawyer who I have met back in 2008 during the Miss Earth Singapore pageant. I was pleasantly surprised when he spotted me in the crowd and came to exchange a few words.

My bestie whom I brought along to the event was clearly star strucked. Requesting I took pictures of her with some of the artistes. But what a darling, she was helping me with my bags and also gave me a helping hand with taking polaroid shots of the invited guests.

Yes the stellar cast included Olivia Ong, Gurmit, Yvonne, Paige, Joanne and old timers like Xiang Yun, Chew Chor Meng, Hui Ge and more. The Straits Times reviewers had only given the film 3 our of 5 stars. I should think it deserved 4 stars.

I'll give it 4 mainly because I loved loved loved the props, the music, the language and the jokes. There were a couple of stories intertwined into one, as well as the juxtaposing of modern day values against the past. The movie also touched on love, lost, separation, and key historical events such as the japanese invation, and a speech made by Mr Lee Kwan Yu. (Be prepared to read the subs if you don't understand completely -Teochew, hockien and Hainanese.)

My favourite characters were the pair of brothers played by Bryan Wong and Zhang Yao Dong, their jokes were best! Hui Ge, who acted as "Ah Boo" was super cute too. You'll see him dancing in the first few scenes of the show.

As Todayonline says"... it is the final vignette that makes this movie shine. The winning combination of Marcus Chin, Kym Ng, Chen Shu Cheng, Bryan Wong, Zhang Yao Dong banter and bond with fantastic chemistry and exuberance. "

I'll say bring your folks and grandparents to watch this now :) to sweeten the event, goody bags were given out with five stones, marbles, candy, a chapteh, carnival tokens to the uncle ringo funfair, and tubes of blowing balloons. Nostalgia much?

So yes, while I was busy snapping pictures for the artistes and guests, I only had 1 taken together with film-maker Royston Tan. But I really wanted one with Chen Su Chen and sadly ...only had time to snap one of him with my bestie.
